JYJ Shows Their Real Selves Through 'Just Us' Album

JYJ is back with their latest album 'JUST US' after a hiatus of 3 years! In this second album, we get to hear the evolution of their music to a more mature and sexy sound.

I was actually surprised that they came back with a mellower sound compared with their previous album, where songs such as 'Get Out' and and 'Mission' are more fast-paced dance songs. Even 'Unnamed Song' was particularly different because it was written to express pent-up frustrations.

The title song 'Back Seat' is a sexy R&B song that shows that JYJ are now 'officially' men, no longer sweet poster boys. Personally I like this song very much, although Engrish is all over the place. That's JYJ for you!

The music video is equally sexy as well, and I think they shot it that way since they knew it wouldn't make it past the Korean broadcasters anyway. Why waste time when they can please all their global fans? I particularly think the video is fresh especially the light show part at the end. It's like as if they have broken free from box sets (ahem... which a certain agency favours for music videos) finally.

My other favourites off the album are '2.30AM', 'So So', 'Dad, You There?', and 'BaboBoy'. I love listening to their harmony in '2.30AM' although the song is so sad, since it's talking about not being able to sleep because of an ex. Though I can't sleep after listening to it in the wee hours in the morning too...

'So So' is a ballad littered with many English phrases that is quite easy listening. I find it quite uplifting, though it's actually talking about loving someone without much dedication... hence the title, 'So So'. I love how the English phrases gel with the Korean lyrics in this one very much.

'Dad, You There?' is a song written by Yoochun for his late father. It's a mellow song but instead of making me sleepy, it actually gives me a chance to unravel after a long day. I can totally listen to this song all day. Their voices in this song will definitely melt your heart!

'Baboboy' is actually a mid-tempo dance song, and I didn't really like it till I listened to it a few times. I died when Yoochun whispered 'Hello beautiful, is anybody home?' :p Too bad they don't have a music video for this song, but you should check out the fancams of their performances in their concerts. Hip trusts way to go!

Each member's solo songs also have shown evolution since their last album. Junsu's solo is musical-inspired, Jaejoong's rock-inspired and Yoochun's hippie-inspired. Just joking!

Yoochun's '30' is as fresh as his previous 'Unnamed Song' since this round he is addressing the worries (and gratitude?) in turning thirty. I think they will forever stay young in my memory although they have reached thirty... But anyway, he slow-raps in the song, almost as if telling a story by talking. He inserts bits and pieces of people who have been special in his life (eg. Junsu, Jaejoong, Yoohwan and Dong Hee), which I think was pretty clever :D

I have never been disappointed in a JYJ album so far and I wish it will stay that way. They will soon enlist in the military once they finish their world tour, and I will still be waiting for them even after that. Always Keep The Faith, yo!

The author is happy yet sad that 'JUST US' signals the impending military enlistment of the members. This album is definitely precious to all fans!

High4 & IU Breaks Norms in 'Not Spring, Love, or Cherry Blossoms'

Rookie group High4 debuted with a sweet ballad track 'Not Spring, Love, or Cherry Blossoms' featuring IU, the nation's little sister.

Though they looked more like the typical idol group, they can sing well and harmonize well with IU, creating a wonderful melody for the cherry blossom season.

Though the song isn't about falling in love, it is rather about feeling lonely when everyone is out enjoying one of the most beautiful times of spring with their loved one.

When I looked up the English translations for the lyrics, the lines below caught my attention:

Everyone but me is in love, singing spring songs
Flowers bloom and sway before my eyes
But I want to hear something else
Something to sweep away everything
Not spring, love or cherry blossoms

Check out the music video for 'Not Spring, Love, or Cherry Blossoms' below!

Looking forward to listen to their next release!

The author loves the cherry blossom season when all the streets are lined with pink blossoms, and intends to at least see it in person once in a lifetime!

2NE1 Finally 'Come Back Home'

I have been looking forward to writing this piece over the last 2 years. I can't believe it's being posted on my blog at last! With this, it signals the return of YG's hip hop/dance/electronica girl group, 2NE1!

I never particularly loved 2NE1 for their style and sound during their debut days, but ever since the release of 'I Am The Best' I have been a converted fan.

Imagine my excitement when 'I Love You' was released late 2012, ahead of their album's release. After many of waiting, the album never came. Fans like myself were frustrated, but remained loyal and calm.

Then in 2013, we were teased by the release of 'Falling In Love', followed closely by 'Do You Love Me'. Speculations of an album release was in the air.

And then the long wait began again... this time many were already calling YG a troll... until the release of the slow-tempo number 'Missing You' in November 2013. They even performed the song during the 2013 MAMA Awards in Hong Kong!

Then came another long wait. We were being left in the cold after being all teased up! Then around January 2014 rumours which led to confirmation of a new album were all around the internet.

After a superbly long wait, their music video for 'Come Back Home' and 'Happy' are released on March 3. Their album dropped on the online stores on February 26, on CL's birthday. As expected, they achieved an all-kill on the music charts!

Check out the music video for 'Come Back Home' below!

In their latest album, 2NE1 managed to keep their sound fresh while experimenting with a more hip-hop/swagger style mixed up with some mellow ballads.

While 'Crush' reminds me very much of 'I Am The Best', 'Come Back Home' is a mid-tempo track which brings out the best in every member, in terms of vocal and individual colour.

Another track which I loved was CL's solo 'MTBD', also known as 'Mental Breakdown', which is a mind-blowing track full of CL's signature swagger and rap. While the bass proves to be an addictive element, the lyrics itself is another story.

The lyrics revolved around karma and revenge towards a former lover, but the part which I liked most was the reference to Bob Marley's famous hit, "Karma karma karma is looking for you/ Watchu' gonna do when they come for you"!

Their latest album 'Crush' certainly did not disappoint me the very least and to sum up what it's done to me, let me borrow a line from one of their songs, 'Boom, boom, boom!"

Check out the music for 'Happy' below!

The author is totally relieved that the long wait is over. Now let's look forward to 2NE1's upcoming 'All Or Nothing' concert in Malaysia this coming May!

CNBLUE: They 'Can't Stop' Surprising Us

CNBLUE is back with a new album a year since their last, titled 'Can't Stop'. Are you readers excited?

Their past albums have centered on a pop-rock sound, but this time CNBLUE returns with a mellower sound, more of a soft-rock sound.

Although I have always listened to their songs, this particular album captured my interest since I'm a fan of ballads.

My 2 favourite songs off the album are 'Can't Stop' (title track) and 'Sleepless Night'. While the former is a half-ballad track which picks up pace in the chorus, the latter is a soothing number that will (ironically) soothe your restless mind on a sleepless night.

Check out the music video to 'Can't Stop' below!

Can't wait to see them perform their latest hits on music shows soon!

The author is in a good mood lately, what with new releases from CNBLUE, Girls' Generation and 2NE1 being released back to back!

In Between Crossroads

Pic credit: http://beyondthebunker.com
It's been awhile since I last wrote about my life and thoughts and I figured that now is the best time than never to do it. One day when I re-read this post, I hope it will bring back some memories...

I'm actually in the midst of waiting for my thesis to be reviewed and to be called for a viva voce. It's something every student dread, but as much as I do dread it, I can't wait for it to be done and over with too.

After I get my thesis done, it's back to the working world again for me. I last left the corporate world 3 years ago when I had a crisis and decided to pursue my master's degree.

Time flies and I'm back here again. Soon, I'll be looking for a job, like many other graduates, and I really hope this time round I will get job, or better still, a career, that suits me.

Writing has always been my passion but I am always afraid that my experience will be a hindrance to my career advancement, therefore I have lowered my expectations this time round on my job scope.

My family members have been questioning what organization do I have in mind when it comes to applying for a job, but in my mind, the organization nor position does not matter.

As long as I have a chance to learn and climb up the corporate ladder to get to my dream career (and own my dream car and house at it!), I am willing to try out any job scope pertaining to writing or editing.

I hope that when I'm old and retired, my first choice will not be one I will regret. After all, we wouldn't know what lies at the end of the road not taken, right?

At this moment, I still have a long way to go...

Here's the source of my inspiration and strength, JYJ. Hope you don't mind the K-pop twist to my post!

The author is in between crossroads and hopes to make the choice that she will never regret with a path less taken.

K-pop album haul & Korean souvenirs

K-pop album haul from my trip
Finally it's time to showcase the K-pop albums and souvenirs I managed to cart home from South Korea!

I bought JYJ Kim Jaejoong's WWW album for myself, CNBLUE's Re:BLUE album for my first brother, and G-Dragon's Coup D'etat for my youngest brother. Possibly the lightest and slimmest souvenirs, but yet the most expensive ones!

I bought my albums from the Music Korea outlet in Myeongdong. To get there using the subway, stop at Myeongdong Station, and take Exit 6. You'll see a Nature Republic outlet. Enter the outlet and go up one floor.

Music Korea is just upstairs and they have an extensive range of K-pop albums, both old and new releases.

Korean souvenirs
I also managed to buy some souvenirs for myself and friends back home. I bought a unique key holder from the gift shop at the Namsan Tower observatory deck. There are also plenty of other unique finds here that are not sold at other shops in Seoul. I managed to get a paper cut-out of a hanbok from the gift shop there too. It's going to be a great memorable souvenir to frame up as a remembrance of my maiden trip.

I also managed to get some fridge magnets in Hongdae (not pictured above), as well as a bookmark and postcards from Insadong.

Insadong is a good place to buy cultural souvenirs, but if you are not heading there then you can find them at Namdaemun or Myeongdong too. Insadong has more authentic souvenirs, but prices can be on the pricey side. For a more upscale souvenir hunting spree, try Ssamziegil. I got my cute postcards there from a small stall vendor :)

That's all for my K-pop album haul and Korean souvenirs. If you have yet to, check out my previous posts on Korean beauty buys and Korean grocery buys!

The author is grateful that she managed to get a copy of Jaejoong's WWW album before it was sold out!

2NE1 Releases Latest Single 'Missing You'

2NE1 is back with their latest installment of what I hope will be the last of teasers to their new album. This round they released a ballad about past love, titled Missing You.

It's really refreshing to hear them sing wholeheartedly to a simple piano accompaniment since they mostly do dance numbers where the beats sometimes eclipses their vocals.

As YG's wife reportedly cried after hearing the lyrics, I could only understand after reading the English translations. It's heartbreaking yes, but I guess not everyone could understand unless they have been through a break-up.

If you have to watch the music video for 'Missing You', check it out below! You wouldn't want to miss out on CL's special appearance ;)

The author is still patiently waiting for 2NE1's comeback. It feels like forever since their release of 'I Love You', the supposedly song for their comeback. Now looking forward to their next concert in Malaysia!

South Korea Trip 2013: Day 2 in Seoul (Chungmuro, Namdaemun & Myeongdong)

Seoul Station, my first stop after arriving from Busan via KTX
My second day in South Korea started by taking a taxi to Busan Station from the hotel. As I had previously booked my KTX ticket online before arriving in South Korea, all I needed to do was present the printed voucher to exchange for the actual train ticket.

To book your tickets online, here's the link to Korail's English website.

Taking the KTX set me back around RM350 for a return ticket, but the price will vary depending on whether you take up the KR Pass or when you stop at designated stops along the way to Seoul.

View of Seoul city from Seoul Station
After a 300km/h ride on the KTX which took 2 hour and 30 minutes, I arrived at Seoul Station. Since it was around noon, I stopped for lunch at the food court which is connected to the Lotte Outlets next door. Food court prices are about the same of that in Lotte Departmental Store in Busan.

Chungmuro subway station
Next from Seoul Station, I took the subway to Chungmuro Station. I previously purchased my T-money chain in Busan the night before from GS25, one of the local convenience stores.

Hello Kitty T-money chain
I bought a Hello Kitty one, so I paid slightly more for it, 8000 won (approximately RM24). Normal cards are way cheaper, probably around 3000 won (RM9). Take note that T-money cards are accepted in Seoul and Busan subway stations, so if you're travelling to these 2 places it's best you get this card.

I also had the card charged with 10,000 won (approximately RM30). Everytime you enter a turnstile at a subway station and swipe your card, you'll be charged 1050 won (approximately RM3.15). If you purchase a ticket at every stop, it will cost you 1100 won (approximately RM3.30). So it is more savings in the long run!

Chungmuro Residence (it's a tall and thin building)
After exiting from Chungmuro Station, I got lost finding Chungmuro Residence and had to get help from the local policemen as well as 7-11 store staff. After much walking, I found the hotel and realised that I had gotten out from the other end of the subway station. For those who intend to stay at Chungmuro Residence in the future, please take Exit 8 when you get off at Chungmuro Station.

2 single beds in the room
I booked the room at around RM280 per night for triple sharing via Agoda. The beds were quite clean but I loved the loft bed more although it's actually for kids. I'm kid-sized by the way :)

The super cozy loft bed
The ceiling's pretty low and I had to crawl on my knees but I had my own space up there and it was fun!

Clean toilet
The toilets were clean but my only grouse was there were no toiletries provided. Make sure to bring your own shampoo and body wash, as well as toothbrush and toothpaste if you're planning on staying here. If you don't mind paying a little extra, there's a little convenience store down at the lobby where you can get these toiletries.

The little kitchenette near the entrance of the room
The little kitchenette is great for those planning to cook their own meals. There is also a huge fridge, so you can buy fresh ingredients and drinks without worrying about how to store everything in it. A huge plus is a washing machine, which I didn't get to use. The instruction is all in Korean though, so you'll need some help to operate it.

The only table in the room with monitor screen as TV
Since the room is half of that of the room I stayed in Busan, I naturally felt that it was a bit cramped since I was sharing it with 2 other travel partners. The TV was a miniscule monitor, but most likely you'll not use it much like I did. Sightseeing and shopping in Seoul will probably take up more time and the room is just a sleeping place, so it's still bearable.

Namdaemun Market
Next up I took the subway to Hoehyeon Station, since I am going to Namdaemun Market. Take Exit 5 and you'll reach at the entrance of the marketplace.

Korean braised pork knuckles on sale
As it's a traditional market, expect to see a lot of ahjummas browsing around for good deals here. Food is abundant here, as well as household wares, Korean ginseng, socks, K-pop goods, and children's clothing.
The Face Shop 50% Sale
Some of the great hauls from Namdaemun include 500 won (approximately RM1.50) spoons and chopsticks which I got from a man selling on a makeshift stall in the middle of the road, 2000 won (approximately RM6) Korean stainless steel rice bowls, and 5000 won (approximately RM15) for pack of ten The Face Shop masks.

I walked from Namdaemun Market to Myeongdong, since these two shopping districts were within 10 minutes walking distance from each other. If you're taking the subway, you can get there by taking Exit 6 at Eljiro 1-ga Station, or Exit 6 at Myeongdong Station.
Shinsegae Departmental Store, where the rich shop
While walking to Myeongdong from Namdaemun Market, I passed by Shinsegae Departmental Store, where the rich wives do their shopping. I saw through the windows that there was a VIP lounge where the ladies were chit chatting while waiting for their drivers to pick them up.

Myeongdong, where the youth shop
If Namdaemun is where the ahjumma shops, then Myeongdong is where the ahgassi shops. Cosmetic stores are along every alley you go. And the promoters here are more aggressive here. Make sure if you're planning to buy cosmetics, come to Myeongdong since they'll most probably give you a free gift to entice you to enter their shop, and more after you make a purchase.

Apart from cosmetic stores, you can get more of the clothing brands Korean youths wear. There is SPAO, one of the most celebrity endorsed brands I've encountered. Since SM artists endorse SPAO, it is fitting that you can take pictures with their posters in-store. Look out for designated photo zones. And best of all, Everysing is located at the top floor of the SPAO building! SMTown fans, don't miss this place out!

Dinner at Gimgane next to SISTAR
I had dinner at Gimgane, where the food was simple but delicious. It's really more to quick and simple food such as ramyun, odeng, tteokbukki and udon, food youths love. The prices here are quite reasonable, ranging from 5000 won to 8000 won per dish (approximately RM15 to RM24).

That sums up my first day in Seoul and I hope you had fun reading my post!

miss A Is All 'Hush'ed Up

miss A is back with their latest album and single titled Hush! With an even sexier concept this autumn, the girls certainly will captivate more fanboys (and fangirls like me too!).

The most intriguing part of their latest album is that their title track is not produced or written by their boss, JYP. Instead, E-Tribe, who was behind the success of SNSD's Gee and Lee Hyori's U Go Girl. Which also means this is a break of tradition, since they have always promoted using JYP songs. Let's see how they fare this round, shall we?

I was actually in South Korea when the album was released, and managed to track down a local K-pop music store nearby my hotel in Busan. It was a mistake on my part not to buy it on the first day of its release as it was sold out the next day!

Check out the music video for 'Hush' below!

Kim Jaejoong pre-releases 'Sunny Day' and 'Butterfly' singles

I just can't wait for Jaejoong to release his latest album WWW, so I'll just post about his 2 pre-released singles Sunny Day and Butterfly to let off some steam!

First off, 'Sunny Day' was the typical ballad that I'd expect Jaejoong to sing. It's something like those songs for drama OSTs, so sad yet beautiful. A collaboration track with Noel's Lee Sang Gon, the song pulls your heartstrings at right places, and their vocal delivery makes it all the more emotional.

Check out the audio clip for 'Sunny Day' below!

Meanwhile 'Butterfly' is a pop rock song, a genre which I think Jaejoong had more fun singing than ballads. It's a fun song filled with electric guitar riffs, and I can picture him singing this song during his solo concert.

Check out the audio clip for 'Butterfly' below!

The album 'WWW' will be released on 29 October, and it's already topping charts in pre-orders. Looking forward to listen to all the new tracks soon!

The author hopes to get a copy of WWW when she lands in South Korea in 2 weeks' time!

IU and Her 'Red Shoes'

IU is back with her latest album, Modern Times. It seems that she is blossoming into a pretty and sexy young lady with her latest album. Somehow I think she does it in style, sort of in a classy way instead of trashy.

The album has been on loop on my playlist for 2 weeks now, and I still can't get enough of it. Maybe it's just my tendency towards jazz and 1920's music, Great Gatsby style, but I digress.

Nevertheless, IU made a mark on K-pop this season with her out of ordinary music choice. Given that the K-pop is overflooded with similar-sounding songs, as if made out of the same cookie cutter moulds, IU's 'Modern Times' album is a breath of fresh air. Never mind that the album is named 'Modern Times' although it might sound more like 'Old Times' to some people.

The title track, The Red Shoes, is a jazz number that'll get you dancing in no time. With its catchy beat and IU's soulful interpretation, this has to be one of the best tracks on the album.

Catch the music video for 'The Red Shoes' below if you have yet to. Look out for some famous faces!

Some of my other favourites on this album are Between The Lips, Modern Times, and Gloomy Clock (featuring SHINee's Jonghyun).

Great comeback from IU this round. I'm already anticipating her next project and transformation. Can't wait for her next acting project too since she did very well in the concluded drama You're The Best Lee Soon Shin!.

The author hopes that IU will be promoting more of her songs on music shows even after 'The Red Shoes' as most of the songs on the album are really good!

JYJ releases 'Only One' for 2014 Incheon Asian Games

JYJ has finally released a new single Only One (Cassiopeias, rejoice!), albeit for the promotional use of 2014 Incheon Asian Games.

Having been out of the music scene as a group for almost 2 years, this single is hopefully the sign of better things to come from the trio in the musical department.

While on hiatus, Jaejoong and Junsu both released solo albums, while Yoochun had focused solely on acting in dramas. He will soon take up the lead role in the movie 'Sea Fog'.

Meanwhile, enjoy the music video for the upbeat single 'Only One' below!

The author is simply thrilled that JYJ has released a new single and is hoping for a full album soon!

2NE1's 'Do You Love Me'

The ladies of 2NE1 have been on a roll lately, releasing one single after another in a span of one month. Recently, they have released their latest single, Do You Love Me, another single off their upcoming album!

Many fans, like myself, have been anticipating the drop of their upcoming album since late last year, after the release of 'I Love You'.

Wait... have any of you guys realized that all of the songs they've released as singles so far have the word 'Love' in the song titles? (I'm thinking their new album is along these lines!)

I also love the fact that each members' part in this song fits really well with their vocal prowess and personalities!

So, without much further ado, do let me present to you the music video for 2NE1's 'Do You Love Me', a party jam that's just perfect to let your hair loose during a pool party (that's just what they did in the video!). Enjoy!

The author is still patiently anticipating 2NE1's new album release. Hopefully all her nails won't get bitten off by then!

The Korean Society in Malaysia is currently organizing the Korea Day 2013 event at the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre from 9-11 August 2013. Open from 10am-8pm, admission is free for all.

There are many Korean related products on display, and those wanting to experience Korean culture and Korean food will have an enjoyable time.

Korean street snacks are the main crowd pullers, with Tteokbukki, Kimbap, Pajeon, Japchae on sale. Kimchi, seaweed, Korean fresh fruits and vegetables are also available.

There will be some Korean cooking demonstrations as well as K-pop performances as well, so if you want to experience a little bit about Korea without stepping out of Kuala Lumpur, do make your way there!

For more information check out the Korea Day 2013 Facebook page.

The author loved the street snacks corner, especially those fried potato chips sold on long sticks! Too bad though, the queue was really long. Settled for a strawberry yoghurt shaved ice instead.

Xia Junsu's 'Incredible' Comeback!

Xia Junsu is back with his latest album Incredible! This second album marks many firsts for Junsu and I hope there are many more to come!

Junsu collaborated with Quincy Jones, Diddy's stepson on 'Incredible', and the music video was shot in a pool party scene in the United States.

Besides Junsu's impeccable English, I also love the fresh concept of the music video, do check it out below!

Incredible is your typical summer song, but I prefer 11AM since I'm a sucker for ballads... Anyway, who wouldn't melt while listening to Junsu's vocals?

'11AM' is recorded in one sitting, a feat which is one of a kind since it's a emotional ballad that would have taken quite a few takes if the singer isn't as good as Junsu is.

Below is the special clip for '11AM', do not be taken aback as the first half of the music video does not have background music. Take the opportunity to listen to Junsu's voice, and the rawness of the recording will definitely help you to appreciate his wonderful voice, if you have yet to.

And on top of that, there is a bonus video for all you Junsu fan's out there, one where he held the showcase for the release of 'Incredible' in Seoul. Lucky fans who managed to watch it live and many more who watched it via YouTube live-streaming like myself can't believe how talented this guy is.

Check out Junsu's 'Incredible' Live Showcase clip below!

The author is pleased and happy that Junsu finally managed to have a showcase to promote his latest album release. Although he hasn't had any invitations to appear on televised broadcasts, I pray that he'll be on one soon!

'Falling In Love' With 2NE1

The ladies of 2NE1 are finally back after a long hiatus! After releasing their single I Love You late last year, they've been keeping mum over the release of the next studio album, but guess what? Falling In Love is exactly what they're gonna make you do next!

'Falling In Love' is the first of a series of singles that 2NE1 will be releasing over a period till their new album drops. So Blackjacks, are you excited yet??

The latest single has a reggae beat which suits the summer as it gives you the beach feels. This is new concept for 2NE1 as it's different from their previous hits.

Not convinced? Well, check out the music video for 'Falling In Love' below and you be the judge.

The author is anticipating the release of more singles from 2NE1, leading up to their album release. Word has it that 'Make It Happen' could be the title of the next single since the title was written on a gold coin in 'Falling In Love' music video. Could it really be? We'll soon find out!

After School Wants To Be Your 'First Love'

The ladies of After School have finally made their comeback for this season and (wow!) they are definitely one to watch out for among the sea of girl group comebacks!

Their latest single First Love is the main highlight of the album and you'll have to see the music video or their live performance at least to see how much effort they have been putting in for their latest comeback.

The sexy mid-tempo number is sure to get you gyrating to the beat and make you wanna sign up for pole dancing classes!

Below is the music video for 'First Love', make sure you check it out if you have yet to!

With their pole dancing lessons, the girls have suffered from many injuries for the sake of perfecting their performance.

While Raina is still performing on live shows but not aggressively dancing since she hurt her arm, Lizzy is not performing on all live shows as she injured her ankle even before the filming of the music video. Nana is currently out due to a fall after a live show. The group is currently promoting with 6 remaining members.

I wish them all the best on their latest album!

The author first listened to After School's Bang! and loved the sound. Most of the time she follows their sub-unit Orange Caramel's releases, but recently 'First Love' proved to be too good to ignore! Their pole dancing rocks!!
