JYJ Shows Their Real Selves Through 'Just Us' Album

JYJ is back with their latest album 'JUST US' after a hiatus of 3 years! In this second album, we get to hear the evolution of their music to a more mature and sexy sound.

I was actually surprised that they came back with a mellower sound compared with their previous album, where songs such as 'Get Out' and and 'Mission' are more fast-paced dance songs. Even 'Unnamed Song' was particularly different because it was written to express pent-up frustrations.

The title song 'Back Seat' is a sexy R&B song that shows that JYJ are now 'officially' men, no longer sweet poster boys. Personally I like this song very much, although Engrish is all over the place. That's JYJ for you!

The music video is equally sexy as well, and I think they shot it that way since they knew it wouldn't make it past the Korean broadcasters anyway. Why waste time when they can please all their global fans? I particularly think the video is fresh especially the light show part at the end. It's like as if they have broken free from box sets (ahem... which a certain agency favours for music videos) finally.

My other favourites off the album are '2.30AM', 'So So', 'Dad, You There?', and 'BaboBoy'. I love listening to their harmony in '2.30AM' although the song is so sad, since it's talking about not being able to sleep because of an ex. Though I can't sleep after listening to it in the wee hours in the morning too...

'So So' is a ballad littered with many English phrases that is quite easy listening. I find it quite uplifting, though it's actually talking about loving someone without much dedication... hence the title, 'So So'. I love how the English phrases gel with the Korean lyrics in this one very much.

'Dad, You There?' is a song written by Yoochun for his late father. It's a mellow song but instead of making me sleepy, it actually gives me a chance to unravel after a long day. I can totally listen to this song all day. Their voices in this song will definitely melt your heart!

'Baboboy' is actually a mid-tempo dance song, and I didn't really like it till I listened to it a few times. I died when Yoochun whispered 'Hello beautiful, is anybody home?' :p Too bad they don't have a music video for this song, but you should check out the fancams of their performances in their concerts. Hip trusts way to go!

Each member's solo songs also have shown evolution since their last album. Junsu's solo is musical-inspired, Jaejoong's rock-inspired and Yoochun's hippie-inspired. Just joking!

Yoochun's '30' is as fresh as his previous 'Unnamed Song' since this round he is addressing the worries (and gratitude?) in turning thirty. I think they will forever stay young in my memory although they have reached thirty... But anyway, he slow-raps in the song, almost as if telling a story by talking. He inserts bits and pieces of people who have been special in his life (eg. Junsu, Jaejoong, Yoohwan and Dong Hee), which I think was pretty clever :D

I have never been disappointed in a JYJ album so far and I wish it will stay that way. They will soon enlist in the military once they finish their world tour, and I will still be waiting for them even after that. Always Keep The Faith, yo!

The author is happy yet sad that 'JUST US' signals the impending military enlistment of the members. This album is definitely precious to all fans!

Park Yoochun, The Elite Bodyguard in 'Three Days'

It's been awhile since I last posted about a K-drama here... So to make a grand comeback, I've decided to write about the K-drama 'Three Days' starring JYJ member Park Yoochun (whee!!), Son Hyun Joo, Jang Hyun Seong, among many others.

‘Three Days’ is a drama that centers on the race to find the South Korean president, portrayed by Son Hyun Joo, who goes missing at his holiday villa.

The clock ticks as his elite bodyguard, portrayed by Yoochun, hunts for him in the short span of three days.
Directed by Shin Kyung Soo (Tree With Deep Roots) and written by Kim Eun Hee (Ghost, Sign), the drama shows lot of promise to be stellar in terms of production and cast.

The drama is currently airing in South Korea and has been getting good ratings and reviews. Although it may seem like a drama that will appeal more to the male audience, many females have been interested in the drama, probably mainly because of the main lead, Yoochun (and there's where I come in too!).

‘Three Days’ will be premiering on ONE HD (Astro B.yond, Channel 393) starting April 2, 2014 and airs every Wednesday and Thursday at 8.55pm. Don’t miss out on this cool action-packed drama!

The author is excited to catch 'Three Days' on air soon. Although she had already watched it online as quick as the fan-subbers subbed the Korean broadcast of the drama. Tee hee!

In Between Crossroads

Pic credit: http://beyondthebunker.com
It's been awhile since I last wrote about my life and thoughts and I figured that now is the best time than never to do it. One day when I re-read this post, I hope it will bring back some memories...

I'm actually in the midst of waiting for my thesis to be reviewed and to be called for a viva voce. It's something every student dread, but as much as I do dread it, I can't wait for it to be done and over with too.

After I get my thesis done, it's back to the working world again for me. I last left the corporate world 3 years ago when I had a crisis and decided to pursue my master's degree.

Time flies and I'm back here again. Soon, I'll be looking for a job, like many other graduates, and I really hope this time round I will get job, or better still, a career, that suits me.

Writing has always been my passion but I am always afraid that my experience will be a hindrance to my career advancement, therefore I have lowered my expectations this time round on my job scope.

My family members have been questioning what organization do I have in mind when it comes to applying for a job, but in my mind, the organization nor position does not matter.

As long as I have a chance to learn and climb up the corporate ladder to get to my dream career (and own my dream car and house at it!), I am willing to try out any job scope pertaining to writing or editing.

I hope that when I'm old and retired, my first choice will not be one I will regret. After all, we wouldn't know what lies at the end of the road not taken, right?

At this moment, I still have a long way to go...

Here's the source of my inspiration and strength, JYJ. Hope you don't mind the K-pop twist to my post!

The author is in between crossroads and hopes to make the choice that she will never regret with a path less taken.

K-pop album haul & Korean souvenirs

K-pop album haul from my trip
Finally it's time to showcase the K-pop albums and souvenirs I managed to cart home from South Korea!

I bought JYJ Kim Jaejoong's WWW album for myself, CNBLUE's Re:BLUE album for my first brother, and G-Dragon's Coup D'etat for my youngest brother. Possibly the lightest and slimmest souvenirs, but yet the most expensive ones!

I bought my albums from the Music Korea outlet in Myeongdong. To get there using the subway, stop at Myeongdong Station, and take Exit 6. You'll see a Nature Republic outlet. Enter the outlet and go up one floor.

Music Korea is just upstairs and they have an extensive range of K-pop albums, both old and new releases.

Korean souvenirs
I also managed to buy some souvenirs for myself and friends back home. I bought a unique key holder from the gift shop at the Namsan Tower observatory deck. There are also plenty of other unique finds here that are not sold at other shops in Seoul. I managed to get a paper cut-out of a hanbok from the gift shop there too. It's going to be a great memorable souvenir to frame up as a remembrance of my maiden trip.

I also managed to get some fridge magnets in Hongdae (not pictured above), as well as a bookmark and postcards from Insadong.

Insadong is a good place to buy cultural souvenirs, but if you are not heading there then you can find them at Namdaemun or Myeongdong too. Insadong has more authentic souvenirs, but prices can be on the pricey side. For a more upscale souvenir hunting spree, try Ssamziegil. I got my cute postcards there from a small stall vendor :)

That's all for my K-pop album haul and Korean souvenirs. If you have yet to, check out my previous posts on Korean beauty buys and Korean grocery buys!

The author is grateful that she managed to get a copy of Jaejoong's WWW album before it was sold out!

Kim Jaejoong pre-releases 'Sunny Day' and 'Butterfly' singles

I just can't wait for Jaejoong to release his latest album WWW, so I'll just post about his 2 pre-released singles Sunny Day and Butterfly to let off some steam!

First off, 'Sunny Day' was the typical ballad that I'd expect Jaejoong to sing. It's something like those songs for drama OSTs, so sad yet beautiful. A collaboration track with Noel's Lee Sang Gon, the song pulls your heartstrings at right places, and their vocal delivery makes it all the more emotional.

Check out the audio clip for 'Sunny Day' below!

Meanwhile 'Butterfly' is a pop rock song, a genre which I think Jaejoong had more fun singing than ballads. It's a fun song filled with electric guitar riffs, and I can picture him singing this song during his solo concert.

Check out the audio clip for 'Butterfly' below!

The album 'WWW' will be released on 29 October, and it's already topping charts in pre-orders. Looking forward to listen to all the new tracks soon!

The author hopes to get a copy of WWW when she lands in South Korea in 2 weeks' time!

JYJ releases 'Only One' for 2014 Incheon Asian Games

JYJ has finally released a new single Only One (Cassiopeias, rejoice!), albeit for the promotional use of 2014 Incheon Asian Games.

Having been out of the music scene as a group for almost 2 years, this single is hopefully the sign of better things to come from the trio in the musical department.

While on hiatus, Jaejoong and Junsu both released solo albums, while Yoochun had focused solely on acting in dramas. He will soon take up the lead role in the movie 'Sea Fog'.

Meanwhile, enjoy the music video for the upbeat single 'Only One' below!

The author is simply thrilled that JYJ has released a new single and is hoping for a full album soon!

Xia Junsu's 'Incredible' Comeback!

Xia Junsu is back with his latest album Incredible! This second album marks many firsts for Junsu and I hope there are many more to come!

Junsu collaborated with Quincy Jones, Diddy's stepson on 'Incredible', and the music video was shot in a pool party scene in the United States.

Besides Junsu's impeccable English, I also love the fresh concept of the music video, do check it out below!

Incredible is your typical summer song, but I prefer 11AM since I'm a sucker for ballads... Anyway, who wouldn't melt while listening to Junsu's vocals?

'11AM' is recorded in one sitting, a feat which is one of a kind since it's a emotional ballad that would have taken quite a few takes if the singer isn't as good as Junsu is.

Below is the special clip for '11AM', do not be taken aback as the first half of the music video does not have background music. Take the opportunity to listen to Junsu's voice, and the rawness of the recording will definitely help you to appreciate his wonderful voice, if you have yet to.

And on top of that, there is a bonus video for all you Junsu fan's out there, one where he held the showcase for the release of 'Incredible' in Seoul. Lucky fans who managed to watch it live and many more who watched it via YouTube live-streaming like myself can't believe how talented this guy is.

Check out Junsu's 'Incredible' Live Showcase clip below!

The author is pleased and happy that Junsu finally managed to have a showcase to promote his latest album release. Although he hasn't had any invitations to appear on televised broadcasts, I pray that he'll be on one soon!

Xia Releases English Single 'Uncommitted'

JYJ's Xia Junsu is back with a bang with his latest English single after the release of his Korean solo album, Tarantallegra!

Titled Uncommitted, Xia shows off his improved English skills in this slow dance ballad. Not bad for someone who practically can't speak the language when he and his JYJ members debuted with an English album 2 years back!

Songwriter Bruce "Automatic" Vandeerver who has worked with The Wanted and Christina Aguilera, praised Xia as one of the best vocalists he has worked with. Amazing, right?

Do check out the sexy music video for Uncommitted below!

Love the background of this music video, somehow I don't get the feeling that this has any connection to K-pop.

Best of all, Xia's latest image is one that most fangirls would die for... he has taken on a more darker look after his stint in the musical Elizabeth as Tod, the angel of death. So handsome and dashing!

What do you think of Xia's Uncommitted? Do share your thoughts in the comments section below!

The author is a fan of JYJ. Somehow after Xia's latest debut, it's hard for her to stay focused on her first bias in the group. Oh no!

Xia Casts Dancing Spell With ‘Tarantallegra’

JYJ fans, especially Junsu fans, have been waiting for this album for a long time. Ever since his debut with DBSK, he has been praised for his great talent in singing as well as dancing.

Therefore it comes as no surprise that Junsu, also fondly known as Xia, chose to have a mixture of dance as well as ballads in his first solo album.

This album is a great success for an artist who did not have a chance to promote his album as others did through advertisements as well as appearances on music shows. The album reached 100,000 pre-orders on the first day and the tickets to the concert tour have been snapped up quickly upon release.

The first track, Sunset, is an intro track that has a dark and mysterious vibe to it. It is featured in the opening strains of the music video for Tarantallegra.

Tarantallegra, the title track of the album, is fresh and different from many K-pop hits that flock into the market. It has a dark sound that somehow draws you in. Other than the repetitiveness of the catchy opener by Aziatix’s FlowsikWhat music do you listen to?’ and the chorus ‘Tarantallegra’, the song has the Xia and Juno stamp all over it.

The Tarantallegra music video is one of the most mind-blowing videos for a K-pop song that I have watched so far. It’s sexy and gothic, and coupled with the dancing skills of Junsu, it left me wanting to hit the rewind button over and over again. The amount of flesh-baring shows that Junsu has put much thought over the fact that the music video would not be aired on Korean television, and might as well be used to target the international audience. Below is the music video for Tarantallegra, and for those yet to watch it, be prepared to be blown off your feet by Junsu!

Set Me Free is another dance track that just screams back at JYJ’s former company... so SM, please set them free!

No Gain is a very unique song, written by Jaejoong for Junsu. It has a melancholic tone, similar to that of In Heaven, just not that moving as the latter.

The fifth track, I Dislike Love, is the OST for Yoochun’s Rooftop Prince drama, and it was reported that while recording for this song, Junsu was so moved that he cried after singing the first verse. It’s a song about heartbreak, and Junsu’s vocals and interpretation makes it all the more beautiful and touching.

Turning Around and Around is another track on the album that fits to be an OST song.  It’s an optimistic song that’s really uplifting. One of my favourites on the album for sure!

The next song is Intoxication, one track that had previously been released in Japanese. Although the lyrics scream sexy and sensual, Junsu’s dancing made it an even sexier song. For the Korean remake, sounds of guitar strumming has been added in. Somehow, I felt the Japanese original is more livelier and upbeat, but hey, that’s just me.

Breath is another dance track, and rumoured to be the sequel to Mission. I was taken aback at the opening by Double K, and somehow the beat did not really get to me. Maybe I will have to watch Junsu dancing away to this one to appreciate it more!

Another ballad, Obviously Know, is another song on heartbreak, in the similar veins of DBSK’s former ballads. I really do wish to hear this sung by five of the greatest idols in K-pop (for me that is, and Cassies all over the world)!

Lullaby showcases Junsu’s soft vocals, showing the mellow side of him that is so different from the ‘dancing machine’ image that he shows during up-tempo songs. A great song to unwind after a long day.

Fever is a dance track that slows and picks up speed, and has a great beat. It doesn’t really stick on me though, and the cheesy English gets to me sometimes. ‘I make you Fever...’ Ah, Junsu... your Engrish is so funny... Tee hee!

The last track of the album, The Dew-Laden Tree, is definitely my most favourite track off the album. Although this ballad has a simple melody, there’s something to this song that just draws you in, and never letting you go. Many reviewers, and also Jaejoong as well, loved this particular track very much. The lyrics are also very touching, a person’s confession of love to a lover. Junsu’s vocal in this song is just perfect, soft and melodious. No one could have done a better job!

Junsu’s personality and hard work can be seen etched over this album. I hope that he continues to sing for many years to come, as a solo artist, as well as with his brothers as JYJ!

PS: For the English translation of the lyrics to all songs on the album, please click on JYJ3.net's link.

The author is a huge fan of JYJ. Junsu’s latest release has turned her into a Xia fan, as she usually only focuses her attention on her bias!

Rooftop Prince: Ratings That Hit The Roof

One of the most anticipated dramas of the season is Rooftop Prince, which is pitted against King2Hearts and Equator Man in the same drama timeslot in South Korea. What makes the race to garner high ratings more tense is the fact that all 3 dramas, from SBS, MBC and KBS respectively, happen to start airing their first episodes on the same day!

The main reason that attracts me to Rooftop Prince is none other than JYJ’s Park Yoochun of course! Ever since his debut in Sungkyunkwan Scandal, I have been a huge fan of his acting as well as music. In Rooftop Prince, he plays a modern day character and a Joseon Crown Prince.

The teasers for Rooftop Prince promises a drama full of hilarious moments as well as mysterious circumstances. And they sure did live up to their promises! Here’s the teaser to Rooftop Prince to convince those of you who still have yet to watch the drama!

Rooftop Prince’s storyline starts off with Yong Tae Moo (Lee Tae Sung) meeting up his cousin Yong Tae Yong (Park Yoochun) in the States and asks him to return to Korea with him on their grandmother’s request. While on a yacht, an incident sparked Tae Moo to hit Tae Yong, throwing hi overboard. Tae Moo’s greed and jealousy set in, and he left Tae Yong to drown while he plans to return alone to Korea and claim Tae Yong’s position as his own.

Meanwhile, in the Joseon era, Crown Prince Lee Gak (Park Yoochun) pines over the death of the Crown Princess (Jung Yoo Mi) who mysteriously drowned in the lake overnight. Lee Gak gathers 3 trustworthy fellows to help him solve her mysterious death: Song Man Bo (Lee Min Ho), Woo Yong Sool (Jung Suk Won), and Do Chi San (Choi Woo Shik). While on a trail to discover the truth behind the Crown Princess’ death, the four fall off a cliff and lands straight into the rooftop house of Park Ha (Han Ji Min).

Park Ha tries to shoo the 4 men in Joseon costumes by bringing them to the Palace, but they get into all sorts of trouble with people and the law. There were many hilarious moments where the 4 men are like fish out of water, and I couldn’t stop laughing although I was already clutching my stomach in pain!

As the 4 men adjusts themselves in the modern world with Park Ha’s help, they came to realize they have crossed over 300 years to the future because they were looking for a solution to the Crown Princess’ death. The Crown Princess’ modern day lookalike is Park Ha’s step-sister Hong Se Na, who happens to be the secretary to Tae Yong’s grandmother.

Meanwhile, Lee Gak finds out that he resembles the missing Tae Yong and assumes the latter’s identity in his bid to get closer to Se Na and also solve his wife’s mysterious death. Tae Moo is convinced Lee Gak is just an imposter and wants to reveal Lee Gak’s true identity. Will Lee Gak eventually get to convince Tae Yong’s grandmother that he is who he claims and solve the mystery at the same time?

Tune in to ONEHD on Astro B.yond Channel 393 every Monday and Tuesday at 9pm to watch the drama unfold itself!

The author is smitten with the drama’s cast, storyline and even the OST by notable singers such as Baek Ji Young, Ali, Jay Park, and last but not least JYJ’s Junsu!

JYJ's In Heaven Album Gets A Remix

JYJ has released a special edition of their recently released In Heaven album to thank their fans' immense support for their first Korean album.

This special edition contains the 10 songs from the original album including the remixed version of Get Out and In Heaven. It also comes with behind-the-scenes footage for their Get Out and In Heaven music videos, as well as the QR movies for the original album.

And the best thing in the album is a 10-minute version of their ‘In Heaven’ music video, which wasn't previously released!

There are also other perks such as the pictures in the booklet are set to be different from those of the original album.

The remixed tracks may vary from the original tracks, while retaining the core essence of the songs. Get Out has a more club feel, while In Heaven has a more pronounced background bass beat, giving it a more upbeat feel.

Here are the audio clips for the remixed versions of Get Out and In Heaven. Enjoy!

Credits go to f4rubypurple for the audio clips.

The author is still keeping the faith that one day JYJ will come and perform in a concert in her home country. Seeing is believing!

Protect The Boss: A Hilarious & Comedic K-Drama

Ever wondered how you could strangle and wrestle your demanding and fussy boss and get away with it? Well, it can happen, at least in Noh Eun Seul’s imagination.

My latest K-drama craze is Protect The Boss, the much talked about and super-hyped drama, which I was reluctant to follow because of the attention it was getting from having JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong starring in it. Imagine having heart palpitations whenever he comes onscreen! (My poor heart would not be able to handle it....)

As it turned out, the drama is a true gem, as every episode gave me much to laugh about with its hilarious lines and scenes. Even my whole family sits down just to watch this fantastic comedy!

Noh Eun Seul (Choi Kang Hee) happens to be an unemployed woman who goes from interview to interview, desperate for a job. Hired by a gang leader, she soon tries to escape from his molesting ways. In her escapade, she bumps into Cha Jiheon (Park Ji Sung) who got entangled in the mob and ends up being beaten as he was mistaken as her acquaintance.

Eun Seul ends up in another interview again, and was hired by Cha Muwon (Kim Jaejoong) for her eccentric personality, with the reason being that she would be a suitable secretary for the equally peculiar Jiheon. Little did she know that her future boss was the same person she had left behind in the mob attack.

Chairman Cha, Jiheon’s father, is a character to watch out for. He thinks that his son is a good-for-nothing and often leaves him to do whatever he wants, resulting in the Jiheon being uninterested in the business. The most hilarious parts are whenever father and son meets face-to-face, whether at home or at work, the father always tries to hit his son. The best part is when they have a scene in the company elevator, both parties’ secretary has to work together to block the CCTV from capturing the embarrassing scene!

Soon after Jiheon’s beatings took place, Chairman Cha was sentenced by the court to doing community work since he was caught beating up the mob that had beaten his son. Aha! What a funny and weird situation this turned out to be, since the catalyst was Eun Seol. Meanwhile, she starts work as Jiheon’s secretary, and all three, including Chairman Cha is oblivious to her as being the person who dragged them into the whole mess.

Jiheon tries to make life difficult for Eun Seol by giving demanding lunch orders but she soldiers on, strangling him in her mind. Till one fine day, Jiheon happens to find out Eun Seol is the woman he has been looking for, as he was dragged into the mob. Will she be able to keep her job and escape from the wrath of Chairman Cha?

Find out by tuning in to Protect The Boss, airing on ONE HD on ASTRO Channel 393 at 9.00pm every Monday and Tuesday!

The author recommends this K-drama to fans of eye candy on screen as this drama definitely fulfills their needs! Not forgetting the wonderful OST I'll Protect You that Kim Jaejoong had a hand in composing! Below is the music video for I'll Protect You. Do check it out!

Credits go to oumae27 for the music video!
