Park Yoochun, The Elite Bodyguard in 'Three Days'

It's been awhile since I last posted about a K-drama here... So to make a grand comeback, I've decided to write about the K-drama 'Three Days' starring JYJ member Park Yoochun (whee!!), Son Hyun Joo, Jang Hyun Seong, among many others.

‘Three Days’ is a drama that centers on the race to find the South Korean president, portrayed by Son Hyun Joo, who goes missing at his holiday villa.

The clock ticks as his elite bodyguard, portrayed by Yoochun, hunts for him in the short span of three days.
Directed by Shin Kyung Soo (Tree With Deep Roots) and written by Kim Eun Hee (Ghost, Sign), the drama shows lot of promise to be stellar in terms of production and cast.

The drama is currently airing in South Korea and has been getting good ratings and reviews. Although it may seem like a drama that will appeal more to the male audience, many females have been interested in the drama, probably mainly because of the main lead, Yoochun (and there's where I come in too!).

‘Three Days’ will be premiering on ONE HD (Astro B.yond, Channel 393) starting April 2, 2014 and airs every Wednesday and Thursday at 8.55pm. Don’t miss out on this cool action-packed drama!

The author is excited to catch 'Three Days' on air soon. Although she had already watched it online as quick as the fan-subbers subbed the Korean broadcast of the drama. Tee hee!

Viki For DiGi: K-drama Fans Rejoice!

DiGi has recently partnered with Viki to bring English subtitled K-dramas to their Malaysian subscribers. Whee!! This could not have been a happier announcement for me since I'm a loyal subscriber of DiGi (and a K-drama queen at that too)!

Nonetheless, according to the webpage, the app is only available for Android users... Fret not if you don't have one... just buy or borrow one (just don't steal, okay?)!

As I have a Blackberry phone on a DiGi line, I was afraid that I could not download the app, but I'll just divulge the secret how I did it. Curious already? Read on....

Well, instead of downloading the app on my Blackberry, I did it on my Android tablet! (Hahaha.... it's tragic I know)

But I still managed to download the app after tapping on the download button on the webpage, which then prompts me to enter my phone number since it couldn't detect my phone number. Next, a message was sent to my phone, and from there I entered the code in the message to the webpage on my tablet.

And, tadaa!! The app was successfully downloaded into my tablet! I registered my account with my email and I was good to go. Started watching 'My Princess' starring Song Seung Hun and Kim Tae Hee already. Hehehe...

Another heads up on this app, it is free for all DiGi subscribers but the promotion is only from 1st July 2013 till 30th June 2014 (so milk it as much as you can!).

Lastly, here's the all important link to get the free Viki app! Enjoy your K-dramas!

The author is ecstatic to get free access to Viki from DiGi since she loves watching K-dramas. Well, DiGi is 'always the smarter choice', ain't it?

Deep Rooted Tree: An Intriguing Drama

Another sageuk (historical drama) has hit the silver screens, titled Deep Rooted Tree. The name of the drama comes from a poem (Yongbieocheonga) that says that trees with deep roots do not sway.

The drama takes place in a prosperous time - the era of King Sejong (played by Soong Joong Ki and older self by Han Suk Kyu), who invented the modern Korean writing system in the 15th century. A series of murders occur in Gyeongbok Palace that targeted scholars of the Hall of Worthies, an institute set up by King Sejong for scholarly research.

As Kang Chae Yoon (Jang Hyuk) investigates these cases and gets closer to the truth, he finds himself embroiled in a massive conspiracy behind the killings which involves a group of genius who are willing to risked their lives towards their cause/goals and secret powers who will interfere with the course of his investigations.

Kang Chae Yoon is a former slave turned royal guard. As a child, he is known as Ddol-Bok, and he protected his mentally retarded father from the teasing of other servants of the Queen's family. Later, Ddol-Bok 's father was arrested then beaten near death, dying in front of him and his childhood friend So Yi (Shin Se Kyung) was taken by Court Ladies. He was saved by Yi Do (young King Sejong) and swore to avenge his father's death before he became a soldier by a changed name.

Because of his father's death as child, Chae Yoon has grudge against the King and his childhood sweetheart, who became mute, was taken as a court lady. He doesn't know that So Yi and Dam are same person who he thought had died and reunited after discovering each other.

Meanwhile, King Sejong, who Ddol-Bok held a grudge against is the creator of Hangul. During his early years as king, Yi Do had a strained relationship with his father and harbored guilt for seeing people's suffering (including his wife's family) by his father's tyrannic rule.

While King Sejong (Yi Do) is played by 3 different actors, I felt that Soong Joong Ki portrayed him the best. As a child, he is a rude and arrogant person, as a young adult, he is demotivated and afraid of his father who uses him as a puppet. As a middle-aged man, he is eccentric and sometimes cold. Joong Ki's portrayal of Yi Do is that of a downcast and dispirited young man, and sometimes I can't help but compare how far he had improved since his last appearance in the other famous sageuk, Sungkyunkwan Scandal.

Will Chae Yoon a.k.a. Ddol-Bok manage to kill his saviour, King Sejong in the end? Find out by tuning in to ONE HD on ASTRO b.yond Channel 393 every Monday and Tuesday at 9pm!

The author is a sucker for sageuks, with Jewel in the Palace, Queen Seonduk, Sungkyunkwan Scandal and The Princess’ Man as her top favourites.

K-drama Glory Jane Shows That You Can’t Escape The Past

Somehow I find Korean scriptwriters tend to be able to knit a huge group of people together, regardless of their social status and personality.

Glory Jane is no exception to that fact, Yun Jane (Park Min Young) is the daughter of a rich businessman who happens to make a promise to Kim Younggwang (Chun Jung Myung), the son of her father’s driver who made a homerun on his first attempt at baseball. The promise was that she would marry him once he became the best baseball player.

Tragedy strikes Jane’s family as her father drowned when the car he was in met an accident and plunged into water. His vice-chairman, father of Seo Inwu (Lee Jang Woo), the ace of the baseball team, only managed to save Younggwang’s father, the driver.

To make it all worse, Jane and her mother also met with an accident while rushing on the way to the hospital as the roads were slippery. Her mother was in a coma, while Jane couldn’t be found by the rescuers. Inwu’s father schemed to take over his best friend’s company since neither of his family members could maintain it. Meanwhile, he asked the driver to locate Jane, give her a new name and hide her away.

Younggwang’s father felt guilty for betraying his former employer, but at the same time needed the money offered by Inwu’s father to open a small noodle shop. He found Jane in a dazed state in a police station, and then put her in an orphanage where he reminded her never to forget her name, Yun Jane.

Years later, Younggwang is a baseball player on a minor league team, former 4th hitter of the major league team, is an innocently confident man who never stops trying his best to re-live past glories. Jane works as a nurse’s aide is a struggling young, cheery, bright girl who always maintains a positive attitude despite her poor background and dreams of becoming a nurse.

She meets Younggwang at the hospital when he sustains injuries, and Inwu when she tried to break the two men apart when they started fighting in the hospital.

One day, a nun from the orphanage came to give her the letters her father wrote to her all these years, but they were actually from Younggwang’s father, her deceased father’s driver.

Unknowingly, she tracks him down, thinking he’s her real father, and chanced upon Younggwang’s family, who misunderstood the poor man for having a child with another woman.

At the same time, Younggwang leaves the hospital where Jane works, leaving a note that hints that he’s interested in her. He comes home and discovers that... she’s actually his step-sister. A lie that started off small became huge! How did Younggwang’s father choose to solve it?

Tune in to Glory Jane every Wednesday and Thursday on ASTRO’s KBS World Channel 391 at 9.00pm and to find out more about this shocking revelation!

The author loves Park Min Young since watching Sungkyunkwan Scandal, but wishes that she would take up a bad girl role for her next drama to see a new side of her.

Protect The Boss: A Hilarious & Comedic K-Drama

Ever wondered how you could strangle and wrestle your demanding and fussy boss and get away with it? Well, it can happen, at least in Noh Eun Seul’s imagination.

My latest K-drama craze is Protect The Boss, the much talked about and super-hyped drama, which I was reluctant to follow because of the attention it was getting from having JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong starring in it. Imagine having heart palpitations whenever he comes onscreen! (My poor heart would not be able to handle it....)

As it turned out, the drama is a true gem, as every episode gave me much to laugh about with its hilarious lines and scenes. Even my whole family sits down just to watch this fantastic comedy!

Noh Eun Seul (Choi Kang Hee) happens to be an unemployed woman who goes from interview to interview, desperate for a job. Hired by a gang leader, she soon tries to escape from his molesting ways. In her escapade, she bumps into Cha Jiheon (Park Ji Sung) who got entangled in the mob and ends up being beaten as he was mistaken as her acquaintance.

Eun Seul ends up in another interview again, and was hired by Cha Muwon (Kim Jaejoong) for her eccentric personality, with the reason being that she would be a suitable secretary for the equally peculiar Jiheon. Little did she know that her future boss was the same person she had left behind in the mob attack.

Chairman Cha, Jiheon’s father, is a character to watch out for. He thinks that his son is a good-for-nothing and often leaves him to do whatever he wants, resulting in the Jiheon being uninterested in the business. The most hilarious parts are whenever father and son meets face-to-face, whether at home or at work, the father always tries to hit his son. The best part is when they have a scene in the company elevator, both parties’ secretary has to work together to block the CCTV from capturing the embarrassing scene!

Soon after Jiheon’s beatings took place, Chairman Cha was sentenced by the court to doing community work since he was caught beating up the mob that had beaten his son. Aha! What a funny and weird situation this turned out to be, since the catalyst was Eun Seol. Meanwhile, she starts work as Jiheon’s secretary, and all three, including Chairman Cha is oblivious to her as being the person who dragged them into the whole mess.

Jiheon tries to make life difficult for Eun Seol by giving demanding lunch orders but she soldiers on, strangling him in her mind. Till one fine day, Jiheon happens to find out Eun Seol is the woman he has been looking for, as he was dragged into the mob. Will she be able to keep her job and escape from the wrath of Chairman Cha?

Find out by tuning in to Protect The Boss, airing on ONE HD on ASTRO Channel 393 at 9.00pm every Monday and Tuesday!

The author recommends this K-drama to fans of eye candy on screen as this drama definitely fulfills their needs! Not forgetting the wonderful OST I'll Protect You that Kim Jaejoong had a hand in composing! Below is the music video for I'll Protect You. Do check it out!

The Princess' Man: Chosun Dynasty's Version of Romeo & Juliet

Currently on my K-drama must watch list is The Princess’ Man starring Park Shi Hoo and Moon Chae Won as the main leads. I was a bit sceptical at first, having watched a great historical drama last year, Sungkyunkwan Scandal which turned out to be a great hit.

In comparison, The Princess’ Man is set in the Chosun Dynasty and focuses more on the power struggle taking place between the King and his brother. Similar themes between the two dramas are the inequality of women compared to men, as they are thought of as the weaker sex. Girls are trained to be good wives, boys are groomed to be scholars in order to be great men.

What attracts me towards The Princess’ Man is the Romeo and Juliet story of Kim Seungyu (Park Shi Hoo) and Lee Seryeong (Moon Chae Won). Seryeong is the daughter of Prince Suyang, the King’s brother, while Seungyu is the youngest son of Kim Jongseo, the Third State Councillor, a trusted advisor to the King.

Prince Suyang proposes the marriage between his eldest daughter and Kim Jongseo’s youngest son, wanting to strengthen ties among the two families as well as taming his daughter. Known to sneak to the stables to ride horses, Seryeong is often the subject of worry for her parents. Meanwhile, the King is sick and wants to entrust his future son-in-law the task of taking care of his son who is to inherit the throne. Thus, he proposes that his daughter marry his advisor Kim Jongseo’s son. (What a mess!)

Undecided, Kim Jongseo decides not to accept the offers of both parties and leaves the decision to the royal court to decide. Seryeong visits the princess and hears that a new tutor would be coming, none other than Seungyu.

Having sent her previous tutors scurrying away, the princess is unperturbed by the idea of having a new tutor while Seryeong wants to meet the man her father had proposed to marry her off to. They switch places and Seryeong sits in for Seungyu’s class. Alas, he happens to see her face but Seryeong did not think of the circumstances that would bring to her for impersonating the princess.

On a day that Seryeong snuck out of the house to horse-ride, she met Seungyu who thought she was the princess. He taught her the basics of horse-riding since she was extremely keen to learn, and it was the start of their process of falling in love for each other.

The King decided on having Kim Seungyu as his son-in-law and Prince Suyang gets enraged at the idea. Meanwhile the princess reveals her identity to Seungyu, shocking him as he discovered that the girl he fell in love with isn’t the princess whom he thought he was about to marry. Prince Suyang finds fault with Seungyu, causing him to be imprisoned while marrying the princess to another candidate, Seungyu’s best friend, Jong.

The King soon passes away after falling ill, and Prince Suyang seeks to remove Kim Jongseo and his men from the royal court. He orders them to be killed, including Seungyu. Seryeong pleads to her father for Seungyu’s life, saying that if he dies, she dies too. Seungyu escapes from captivity and happens to watch Prince Suyang’s hunchmen kill his father in front of his very own eyes.

Biding his time and seeking revenge, Seungyu walks into a crowd of people welcoming Prince Suyang at his house. He grabs a sword, waiting to rush forward and stab the Prince, until he glimpses a frail-looking Seryeong bowing to her father, welcoming him home.

Will their love stand the test of the fact that their families are enemies? Find out by watching The Princess’ Man on KBS World on ASTRO Channel 391 every Monday and Tuesday at 9pm!

The author wants to share a great song from the OST of the drama, Again, Today I Love You, sung by Baek Ji Young. Do check it out below!

City Hunter: An Action & Thiller K-Drama

After watching the trailers and also reading reviews from K-drama addicts praising this City Hunter, I could not resist watching the series, what more after my ASTRO has been upgraded to ASTRO b.yond (yay, ONE HD here I come!). Other obvious reasons being the stellar cast of Lee Min Ho (Boys Over Flowers’ Gu Jun Pyo), Park Min Young (Sungkyunkwan Scandal’s Kim Yun Hui) and Lee Joon Hyuk (Three Brothers’ Kim Yi Sang).

Besides drooling over the hot men on my screen every Monday and Tuesday, the cinematography and plot of this drama is awesome and keeps me glued to the series week after week. It’s definitely worth every sen spent to subscribe to get HD quality as it enhances viewing quality (Oops, looks like I might switching over from KBS World then!).

City Hunter the drama is an original script based on the world-famous novel by Tsukasa Hojo, a renowned Japanese mangaka, in which the setting from Tokyo 1980 is switched to Seoul 2011. According to the original story structure, the protagonist becomes the City Hunter and his character develops while resolving gratifying cases.

Lee Yoon Sung (Lee Min Ho) is a talented MIT-graduate who works on the international communications team in the Blue House. He plans revenge on five politicians who caused his father’s death with his surrogate father Lee Jin Pyo and Bae Shik Joong, his sidekick whom he rescued when he was younger.

In his quest to track down the ‘Group of Five’, consisting of the President and several ministers and senators, he meets Kim Na Na (Park Min Young), a rookie secret service agent at the Blue House who is responsible for protecting one of the politicians he has been seeking. She is also assigned as his trainer in the joint programme where the international communications team takes judo lessons from the secret service team.

The chemistry between Na Na and Yoon Sung is undeniable though they try to act cool around each other. Yoon Sung creates a playboy image for himself to camouflage his ‘night activities’ as the City Hunter, and Na Na misunderstands by assuming that he is indeed one when he tried to make moves on her.

Since Shik Joong mysteriously keeps a photo of her which Yoon Sung talks to when he was lonely, he felt a connection with her since the first day he met her face to face and vows to protect her no matter what. When she was almost evicted out of flat and can’t afford to pay her comatose father’s hospital bills, he swooped in and rescued her.

Yoon Sung demands to stay with her in her flat which he had bought up, in the pretence that he owns the place and needs someone to cook and clean for him, but in actual fact wanting to keep watch over her to make sure she is safe. Soon after, she begins to suspect that Yoon Sung might be the City Hunter everyone has been looking for, and with whom she had various close encounters while on the job.

Will her guess turn out to be right? Tune in to City Hunter every Monday and Tuesday on ASTRO b.yond’s ONE HD Channel 393 at 9.00pm and to find out more about this shocking revelation!

The author loves the OST of this drama as it is also packed with powerful names such as Lim Jae Bum, Kim Bo Kyung (my favourite singer and song), SHINee's Jonghyun, KARA's Park Gyuri, as well as groups such as Rainbow, Girl's Day and Apple Mango.
